"I believe that most of humanity's dysfunctions are rooted in the basic structure of our nervous system: at bottom, we are exquisitely wired to detect the slightest signals of danger, as a way of protecting life. When fear is triggered, it trumps all other emotions until the fear is dealt with. Fear drives us down into our brains amygdala; when that happens, our access to our cerebral cortex is severely limited until we feel safe again. The key to gaining cooperation is to help everyone feel 'safe enough' to want to cooperate, and to be ABLE to cooperate constructively. We've learned more about the human brain & nervous system in the last 10 years than in all of prior human history. The greater understanding of 'human nature ' that neuroscience has learned still needs a much wider audience - the more we understand how we actually function, vs. the long-held conventional 'wisdoms' - i.e., erroneous beliefs we've been lumbered with - the better chance we and our world have to thrive."
